Concrete Recyclers’ Baseline GHG Inventory Case Study

Concrete Recyclers is Sydney’s leading recycler of concrete, brick and asphalt waste. The company is uniquely positioned because it operates as a waste receiver and a bulk materials supplier simultaneously. Concrete Recyclers operates several yards across Sydney, where they take construction and demolition waste and turn it into a range of recycled products, including road base, aggregate and sand used on civil construction projects. 

Concrete Recyclers has consistently prioritised environmental sustainability and achieved an impressive material recovery rate of 99.9%. However, they recognised the importance of understanding their overall environmental impact and were eager to create an action plan for greater sustainability. To achieve this, they partnered with WolfPeak. 

WolfPeak worked closely with Concrete Recyclers to develop their first greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory. We provided guidance in determining which activities would be measured in the inventory, supported making the data collection process as smooth as possible, and crunched all the numbers to precisely measure the company’s emissions. 

Concrete Recyclers were keen to understand the emissions intensity of their products so they could compare this across their yards as well as to their competitors. To this end, WolfPeak developed a range of reporting metrics to help the company communicate the environmental benefits of their products to customers. Concrete Recyclers will also use these metrics to compare the efficiency of each of their yards, which can identify where they may need to make changes, for example, investing in new equipment or solar PV.
